Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
