Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unwanted offerings can be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date remains to be announced, but the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the revenue going to non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Collection
The items reportedly stored in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused for years.
A complete inventory remains made public, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The question focused on whether a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Political Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a unconventional way to deal with the protocol gifts that accumulate during a political career.
