Japan's Economy Shrinks while Exports Are Hit by US Trade Duties
Japan's economy has shown a decline for the initial time in six quarters, primarily driven by declining overseas shipments because of newly imposed American trade duties.
G7 Economic Standings
Japan stands as the initial G7 country to announce an economic contraction in the most recent three-month period.
With the United States still needing to publish its gross domestic product data for the third quarter, the present G7 economic standings show:
- France: +0.5% quarterly growth
- UK: 0.1 percent
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
- Germany: zero growth
- Italian economy: 0%
- Japanese economy: -0.4%
Travel Shares Decline during Diplomatic Dispute with Beijing
Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is experiencing an escalating diplomatic conflict with China regarding Taiwan.
Shares in Japan's travel and retail businesses have fallen noticeably after China urged its residents to refrain from visiting to Japan.
This decision by Chinese authorities heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by remarks from Tokyo's recently appointed PM about the possibility of deploying troops in the case of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.
The development triggered a surge of selling across Japan's leisure shares.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator stock dropped by 5.7 percent
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3%
- The national carrier fell by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan tension over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory discouraging travel to Japan brings near-term difficulties for consumer-facing sectors.
"Tourists from China represent roughly 25% of Japan's inbound traffic, making department stores, luxury retail, and tourism services especially at risk."
GDP Decline Breakdown
Japanese gross domestic product dropped by 0.4% in the third quarter, as manufacturers' exports were hit by tariffs levied by the United States recently.
Overseas shipments were a major driver of the contraction, dropping by 1.2% compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a the same period last year.
Earlier this year, the American government had threatened Japan with a additional 25 percent tariff on its products, which was later reduced to 15 percent when the two nations concluded a trade deal.
Consumer spending also fell, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product shrank by 1.8% in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was stable in the first half of this year and today's GDP figures showed that growth is paused temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be back on a moderate growth trend going forward."
The US administration has recently recognized the effect of tariffs on Americans, reducing tariffs on food imports including meat, tomatoes, coffee and bananas amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
