The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
