Treasury Chief Rachel Reeves Aims for Specific Measures on Household Expenses in Forthcoming Financial Plan

Chancellor Reeves has stated she is preparing "focused action to address cost of living challenges" in the upcoming Budget.

In comments to media outlets, she stated that lowering price rises is a joint responsibility of both the administration and the Bank of England.

The United Kingdom's inflation rate is forecast to be the most elevated among the G7 advanced economies this year and next.

Possible Energy Cost Measures

It is understood the government could take action to lower energy bills, for instance by slashing the present 5% level of VAT charged on energy.

Another possibility is to reduce some of the policy costs presently included in bills.

Budgetary Constraints and Analyst Expectations

The administration will receive the next report from the independent fiscal watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, on the start of the week, which will show how much scope there is for such measures.

The view from most economists is that the Chancellor will have to declare tax increases or budget cuts in order to adhere to her declared debt limits.

Earlier on Thursday, estimates indicated there was a £22 billion gap for the Treasury chief to resolve, which is at the more modest range of expectations.

"It is a collective task between the Bank of England and the administration to bear down further on some of the causes of inflation," Reeves told reporters in Washington, at the conferences of the IMF and global financial institution.

Revenue Commitments and International Concerns

While much of the focus has been on expected tax rises, the chancellor said the most recent figures from the fiscal watchdog had not altered her vow to campaign commitments not to increase tax levels on income tax, sales tax or social security contributions.

She blamed an "unpredictable world" with rising geopolitical and commercial tensions for the fiscal tax moves, likely to be directed on those "with the broadest shoulders."

International Economic Disputes

Commenting on concerns about the United Kingdom's commercial links with China she said: "The UK's security interests always are paramount."

Recent announcement by China to tighten export controls on rare earths and other resources that are key for high-technology manufacturing led US President the US President to threaten an extra 100% tariff on goods from China, increasing the possibility of an all-out trade war between the two economic giants.

The American finance chief called China's move "commercial pressure" and "a global supply chain control attempt."

Questioned on considering the American proposal to participate in its battle with the Asian nation, Reeves said she was "extremely troubled" by China's actions and called on the Chinese government "to avoid restrictions and restrict access."

She said the move was "bad for the global economy and generates additional obstacles."

"In my view there are sectors where we should confront Chinese policies, but there are also important opportunities to trade with China's economy, including financial services and other areas of the economy. We've got to achieve that balance correct."

The chancellor also stated she was collaborating with international partners "on our own critical minerals plan, so that we are less reliant."

Health Service Medicine Costs and Funding

The Chancellor also acknowledged that the cost the National Health Service spends on drugs could rise as a result of ongoing negotiations with the US government and its drugs companies, in return for lower tariffs and investment.

A number of the biggest global drug companies have said in recent statements that they are either pausing or abandoning projects in the UK, with several attributing the insufficient payments they are obtaining.

Recently, the Science Minister said the price the health service spends on medicines would must rise to prevent businesses and pharmaceutical investment leaving the United Kingdom.

Reeves told the BBC: "We have seen as a result of the cost structure, that medical research, new drugs have not been offered in the United Kingdom in the extent that they are in other European countries."

"We want to make sure that people getting treatment from the NHS are can receive the finest essential drugs in the world. And so we are looking at all of that, and... aiming to secure increased investment into the UK."
